The summer of 2010 saw an incredible evolution of the Project. With the help of a steady stream of volunteer/participants we created most of 4 sandstone trees and 180 degrees of "earth" mosaic. We are Finishing up the grouting as weather permits and gently putting the project to rest for the winter.

Because our main building materials, grout and mortar, do not cure properly under 50 degrees it is tricky to schedule regular work events. If you would like to be alerted to windows of opportunity working on wintertime activities, please email us.

Many, many thanks to those who participated throughout the warm months and please feel free to join us as spring 2011 approaches.

We are creating the mosaic portion that represents the earth. This includes hundreds of broken tile pieces and hand made dimensional tiles created during workshops with the GAP Group, Generational Active People, and open community workshops in the basement of the Lyons Community Church. The sculptural earth/stone tiles were created over a 2 year period and glazed and fired by a core group of 5 dedicated glazers and others who spent many nights in the Town of Lyons Public Works Building glazing and firing kiln loads of tiles.

Thanks to all who participated in our April 18th Lyons Clarifier Project
Community Work Day!
The next Clarifier Work Day will be Sunday, May 16, 3-5 pm.
Location: Across the bridge from the Black Bear Hole.
A scheduled group of volunteers (age 16+) will be working on weeding the 'roof', clearing the rim 'channel',
mounding and covering the dirt. Also needed are volunteers to help remove the calcite deposits on
the surface (using a weak solution of muriatic acid. Eye, hand protection provided.)
All voluteers will be asked to sign waivers. Please bring tools, drinking water; wear work clothes (long sleeves, pants).
We're also looking for a volunteer to put a slanted roof on our (approx.) 6'x8' storage
shed, located on site, just east of the Clarifier.
The public is invited to stop by to view work in progress.
Stay tuned for our next public work day, early June; we'll
be sorting and transporting 'rip rap' sandstone pieces to the Clarifier site
for the 'trees' portion, which will be applied first.
Thanks to Kyle and the Town of Lyons for their help draining the 13,000 gallons
of water from the tank in April.

June July August and September we will predetermine work days that will remain consistent. These days Cathy, Priscilla and core volunteers will be working on site for several hours. Times and dates will be advertised and community members are invited work on these days.

The order of application is this:

• Repairs to the surface, steel support bracing, a cinder block structure in one section,
• Drawings on the surface in chalk, an out line that defines the areas to be filled in with stone mosaic and tile
• Create stone trees, move stone to site, purchase thin set mortar and acquire tools
• Define areas of mosaic by outline with black stone and black tile
• Begin Mosaic and tile sections.
• Lanscaping and Planting
• Signage: big clear list of participants to the best of our ability, Thank yous. discription of areas that different groups have helped with, i.e. Lyons Elementary, spring 2009, Summer time tree on South side, etc.
• Future, would like to see a pebble mosaic path encircling the whole thing...
• A pronounced "Lip" or roof over the edge to protect the surface from the elements.

We need to maintain a strong sense of contrast, otherwise the whole thing will tend towards being monochromatic and difficult to read.

Sun: This will be either created by the seniors or a mosaic that represents the seniors on the west side of the building as you walk east on the path it is the big flat wall that faces you. We still would like to make a tile sun with the seniors at walt self and install it in that part of the structure.

experimenting with the sandstone trees

Working with local master mason and friend, Robert Smith, we experimented with what the sandstone trees would look like. The circular building will have 4 large sandstone trees in each of the cardinal directions. each one will represent a season, North - winter, East - Spring, South - Summer and West - Fall. Using the local sandstone rubble we wanted to create a "bark" texture by aligning the stone pieces on a vertical, rather than the traditional, horizontal. This was a little bit of stretch because the laying of courses of stone horizontally creates some integrity. Each row of stone holds up the next and so forth up the wall. So, we just had to try it out. Bobby was magnificent, helping during a beautiful day late in the summer to experiment with this technique. It looks like it is going to work. Now we just need to get the stone!!!

On April we met, at last, with the GAP Group, (Generationally Active People) to create some tiles for the Clarifier Project. Scheduling had been tricky and was foiled in March by The Big Snow Storm. Now at last we were able to meet with a group of extraordinary folks who have been meeting together, elders and high school students, and making art projects, organizing field trips and sharing for many years.

The Clarifier is a Blast! Making Community Art with Big Equipment!

Thursday, April 2, after years of plodding along we blasted into the next phase of the project! In order to prepare the surface of the structure for tiles we needed to remove the old paint. With the help of Kevin Alves, who coordinated the equipment and supplies, we were able to blast away half of the paint. In a couple of weeks we will get the equipment and sand to complete this phase. Then the "canvas" will blank and ready for tiles and stone.

Half way through the day of half way blasting, Mystie Bracket brought a delicious gluten free lunch complete with homegrown kambucha tea and sweetpotato chips! thank you Mystie, You rock!

Kevin and Larry Cohan, (my brother), were the fantastic blaster team. Mystie and Cathy shoveled wet dirt away from the bottom to create a nice even landscaping line.

The gentlemen from the Town of Lyons Utility Department showed up at the right moments throughout the day. Moving pallets of sand, (giving a new meaning for the 'artist's pallet'), and digging with a big yellow backhoe the areas that were too deep for our shovels. They also made a special trip to to Clark's True Value Hardware to get a new window for the sandblasting hood. The plastic was so blasted that the 'fantastic blasters' could not see where to blast. Amazing they did as great of a job as they did.

I just have to say that sandblasting is an incredibly slow process... the nozzle blows one inch wide line of paint clear of the concrete at the speed of a carefully slow paint brush. It is mesmerizing to watch.

Clarifier Project
2009 Is the Year of the Clarifier Sculpture

2009 is the year of the Clarifier. With the incredible support of the Lyons Community Foundation, we are working hard to get the project cooking and plan to finish the installation by September 2009! With your help!

Come learn about the progress of Lyons' only large-scale community art collaboration tile and mosaic project. The first of a series of 5 free workshops is Sunday March 29 from 1 pm - 3pm, at the Lyons Community Church, 350 Main Street, Lyons. Future workshops are on Sundays from 1 pm - 3 pm, April 12, April 26, May 17 and May 31. All workshops are at the Lyons Community Church.

Located across from the Black Bear Inn, The Clarifier Project builds upon the structure of an abandoned wastewater treatment facility tank to create a community "art park." Begun in 2003 (?) with workshops guided by and involving the members of the GAP Group, (Generationally Active People), and members of the Lyons community we have developed a simple and provocative theme: The rhythm of nature. Images of the landscape and local trees and animals blend to create 900 square foot, 360 degree cylindrical sculpture, representing the turning of the seasons and the flowing of the river. Movement and rhythm in nature are the melody upon which our lives dance. 4 large sandstone trees will mark each of the cardinal directions and represent each of the four seasons. The area between the trees will be a cacophony of delightful hand painted tiles representing images of earth, sky, birds, plants, animals that surround us and much more. The overall effect will be that of a shrine to peace within our local community and to the earth that sustains us.

The Lyons community has generously helped with time and energy to get up to this point. We have over 1000 hand-painted tiles. 200 square feet of handmade leaves created by local citizens as well as students from both the Lyons Elementary School and the Lyons Middle Senior High School. The Town of Lyons Public Works Department has cleared the area and prepared it for landscaping. Lyons' own Urban Oasis Design has created a great looking professional landscape design as a generous donation to the project. We have received funding from Boulder County Arts Alliance, Neodata Foundation, SCFD, (Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, Tier III), The Lyons Community Foundation and many local businesses and individuals. All this support feeds an effort to create a work of art and that is uniquely "Lyons."

Because of its lovely location adjacent to the highway and to the St. Vrain River we hope to draw visitors to the Clarifier Sculpture from near and far. Signage will tell the story of how this project came about as a community collaboration and was created by many individuals who came together as a circle create this one-of-a-kind shrine to peaceful balance.

This is one stop along the continuum of community art making. The Clarifier Project is a community public art collaboration. It brings people together to participate in the evolution of a major public art park in Lyons, Colorado. Using an unused public works "tank" as a base, the participants will create a hand painted and sculpted tile, mosaic and masonry monument to community and creativity.

During the month of May a documentary exhibit at the Boulder Public will feature a sampling of the beautiful hand painted tiles, photos and sketches that showcase the project and describe the process of making a community mosaic.

Tile Painting Workshops

During a handful of tile painting workshops offered in 2006 children, moms, dads, guys, and gals of all ages came to paint images on the tiles. The materials were simple unglazed, or bisqued, tiles, underglaze paint colors, and clear glaze. All the materials were provided. The tiles were then taken to the ART HUT, a facility of the Town of Lyons Parks Recreation and CULTURAL Department, where they were glaze fired to cone 04 in an electric kiln.

Pictures of birds are provided for inspiration but partipants are encouraged to paint whatever they want.

A group met on September 16th to bless the project and to have fun. We cleared the area of brush and debris. Next, participants drew fanciful images, words and patterns onto the walls of the Clarifier with sidewalk chalk. As the wind howled and brought a chilly storm into the area we blessed the ground. We gathered into a circle sang a song and asked for peace. Thank you to all who participated that first day.

welcome to the the clarifier project. the blog is new. the project is begining to gain momentum.

beginning in october on 2004 this website will post articles and photos related to the project and will of course welcome imput from you as the project begins to unfold.

the clarifier project is multi-layered . (as most things tends to be.)

as a 'thing' the clarifier is cement cylinder approximately 70 feet in circumfrence. it was originally used in some capacity in the process of waste water treatment. the details of this process are not know to me. before the project began, there lived within the giant 'cup,' a blender that would stir the contents. now, however the inside is filled with debris from a former cement block building, rock and dirt. that is it, a cement round thing about 12 feet tall filled with rubble and dirt.

as an 'idea,' the clarifier project was launched as a way to bring a community together. it is an artful community collaboration. based on the sucesses of the 'lyons mural project' we saw it as a way to bring art making to the town of lyons. we want to create an art park that the people of lyons could feel that they were a part of.

we have a reverance for the space and it is our intention to allow peace to grow there. for it to become a place where people can come for regeneration and calm, regardless of the stink. (the new wastewater treatment facility is not far away)

once the 'thing' and the 'idea' came together and played within the minds and hearts of a handful of residents, the next idea arose: to create from this 'round house' a garden of animals, birds, fish and plants, a harmonious cohabitation, a diverse and peaceful managerie.
